Phnom Penh - In a move to bolster grassroots development in Cambodia, the Government of Japan has pledged a total of US$424,907 for three vital projects under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, known as "KUSANONE." The Grant Contracts were formalized today, with Mr. TANINAI Ichitomo, Chargés d'Affaires ad interim at the Embassy of Japan in the Kingdom of Cambodia, leading the signing ceremony alongside representatives from the recipient organizations.

The Project for Rehabilitation of Thnorldach Irrigation Facilities in Oddar Meanchey Province (US$119,424)

Recipient: Oddar Meanchey Provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology

This grant aims to rehabilitate existing irrigation facilities with declined reservoir functions in Oddar Meanchey Province. The area faces drought during the dry season due to inadequate water storage in the facilities. Floods are also common due to insufficient water storage capacity. The project anticipates benefiting over 1,000 local residents by improving irrigation facilities, ensuring stable agricultural water supply, and increasing rice production. The enhanced infrastructure is expected to elevate residents' standards of living and income.

The Project for Construction of Bridge in Kampong Leaeng District, Kampong Chhnang Province (US$137,207)

Recipient: Kampong Chhnang Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport

This grant will be utilized to replace a deteriorated bridge in Kampong Leaeng District, Kampong Chhnang Province. The existing bridge poses safety risks with several holes and protruding wires. Approximately 10,000 local residents will benefit from the new concrete bridge, ensuring safe daily commutes and facilitating the transportation of agricultural products. The project is expected to contribute to an increase in local population incomes.

The Project for the Construction of a Bridge in Ou Mras Commune, Siem Bouk District, Stung Treng Province (US$168,276)

Recipient: Stung Treng Provincial Department of Rural Development

This grant targets the replacement of a fragile wooden bridge in Ou Mras Commune, Stung Treng Province, with a new concrete bridge. The existing bridge, regularly used by local residents for commuting, is damaged and poses risks to children and the elderly. The new bridge, benefiting around 2,800 residents in four villages, will provide a safe path to schools, markets, and health centers throughout the year. Additionally, the improved infrastructure will facilitate the transportation of agricultural products, enhancing residents' living standards and increasing agricultural incomes.

The "KUSANONE" Projects initiated in Cambodia in 1991 by Japan aim to support the country's reconstruction and development at the grassroots level. The assistance focuses on protecting vulnerable populations facing poverty and misfortunes while promoting the self-reliance of local communities. Since 1991, Japan has provided over US$68 million for 684 KUSANONE projects, implemented by local authorities and non-governmental organizations across Cambodia.
